- Confident or Stuck-up? - Tip #15

The classy person is always developing a strong self-esteem. But what does that mean? We hear the term ‘self-esteem’ all the time, but what exactly is it, and what does it mean for each of us? And just as important, let’s look at what ‘self-esteem’ is not.

I’ve always found words fascinating because we use them to program our brains, which then controls our attitudes and actions. Because of this, using the correct word or words to describe behaviors and actions can give your brain an excellent goal to move towards that will then elevate your personal performance.

So let’s look at two very important words, Self-esteem and Egotism, and play the word game of ‘follow that definition’ by using Webster’s dictionary.

Self-esteem is defined as a belief in oneself; self-respect, and the synonym is pride.

So now let’s define ‘self-respect’, which is to have the proper respect for oneself and one’s worth as a person.

And last, the word pride, which means a proper respect for one-self; sense of one’s own dignity or worth; self-respect: delight or satisfaction in one’s own or another’s achievements; the best of a class, group, society; the best part.

Now, let’s look at Egotism, defined as a constant excessive reference to oneself in speaking or writing, self-conceit, selfishness.

That leads us to the word conceit, meaning an exaggerated opinion of oneself, one’s merits, vanity.

Next, Vanity which is the act or fact of being vain or worthless; the quality or fact of being vain, or excessively proud of oneself or one’s qualities or possessions, self-conceit.

And lastly, Vain, having no real value or significance; worthless, empty, idle, hollow; having or showing an excessively high regard for one’s self, looks, possessions, ability.

So, we’ve now leaned that a high self-esteem means a person has a healthy respect for oneself. When you have this healthy self-respect, you’re able to focus on the other people who are around you in every situation you encounter throughout the day.

What sets the classy person apart from others is that they not only have strong self-esteem by considering themselves worthy human beings who have value, but they also develop confidence in their ability to achieve their goals.

But even more important, the classy person knows that most goals can’t be accomplished alone. Therefore, they also value and respect others, wanting them to succeed. Behaving in a dignified manner, the classy person can be delighted with someone else’s accomplishments, in addition to their own.
